What is Berotec?
Berotec is a short-acting beta-2-sympathomimetic (SABA) with the active ingredient Fenoterol. It is used as an emergency medication for acute respiratory distress by asthma or COPD.
Fenoterol acts similar to salbutamol, but has a somewhat stronger effect on the cardiovascular system. Berotec is used primarily as a dosing aerosol and as a solution for nebulisers. The active compound is also contained in the combination berodual (with ipratropium).
Berotec is manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim.
Active Ingredients & Mechanism of Action
Active ingredient: Fenoterol
Fenoterol acts as beta-2-agonist:
Active mechanism:
- Activated beta-2-adrenoceptors in bronchial muscles
- Increases intracellular cAMP levels
- Relaxing the smooth muscles
- Extends the narrowed bronchies
Time:
- Effect entry: 3-5 minutes
- Maximum effect: 30-60 minutes
- duration of action: 4-6 hours
Comparation to salbutamol: Fenoterol has a slightly lower beta-2 selectivity and therefore has a stronger effect on the heart. Salbutamol is preferred in most patients.
Who is it suitable for?
Berotec is suitable for:
- Acute breathability in asthma or COPD
- Demand therapy for bronchospasmus
- Prophylaxis of stress asthma
Not suitable as:
- Complete continuous therapy for asthma
- Replacement for inhalative corticoids
** Salbutamol is the first choice in most patients as SABA. Berotec is an alternative to incompatibility or as part of Berodual.
