What is Yasmin?
Yasmin is a combined hormonal contraceptive pill (combination pill), which contains two active ingredients: the gestagen Drospirenon and the estrogen ethinylestradiol. It is manufactured by Bayer and is one of the most prescribed pills worldwide.
The pill is characterized by the gesstagen Drospirenon, which is very similar to the body's own progesterone. Unlike older gestagens, Drospirenon has a slightly dewatering effect and acts antiandrogen – so it can improve acne and excessive body hair.
With correct application, Yasmin offers a very high concept protection with a Pearl index of about 0.1 to 0.9.
Active Ingredients & Mechanism of Action
Active ingredient: Drospirenon 3 mg, Ethinylestradiol 0,03 mg
Yasmin prevents pregnancy by several mechanisms:
Ovulation inhibition: The hormones in Yasmin suppress ovulation by influencing the body's hormone production. The brain receives the signal that sufficient hormones are already present, and the distribution of FSH and LH – the hormones that trigger ovulation – is inhibited.
Thickening of cervical mucus: The mucus in the cervical neck becomes more viscous, so sperm can penetrate into the cervix more difficultly.
Change of cervical mucosa: The mucous membrane of the uterus is less built up, which would make it harder to insert a fertilized egg.
Special Drospirenon: The drospirenon contained in Yasmin additionally has an antimineralocorticoide effect – it acts easily dewatering and can thus reduce water retention before the period.
