What is Canes?
Canesten is the brand name for Clotrimazole preparations from Bayer. It is one of the most famous antimycotics and has been successfully used for decades for the treatment of fungal infections.
The Canesten product range includes various dosage forms for vaginal mushroom, skin fungus and foot fungus. Canesten GYN is specially designed for treating vaginal fungal infections.
Canesten is available in pharmacy without prescription.
Active Ingredients & Mechanism of Action
Active ingredient: Clotrimazol
Canesten contains the active ingredient Clotrimazole:
Active mechanism:
- Impairs the formation of fungal cell membrane
- Inhibits the enzyme Lanosterol-14α-Demethylase
- Blocks the Ergosterol synthesis
- Makes the fungal membrane transparent
- The mushroom dies or can no longer grow
Activity spectrum:
- Candida albicans
- Other Candida species
- Dermatophytes
- mold mushrooms

Who is it suitable for?
Canesten is suitable for:
Canesten GYN (vaginal):
- Acute vaginal mushroom
- Recurring vaginal candiosis
- Mushroom infections of the outer genital region
Canesten cream/spray/solution:
- Skin fungus (Tinea corporis)
- Foot fungus (Tinea pedis)
- Mushroom in skin folds
- Plum braids
Especially suitable:
- If rapid relief is desired
- In typical vaginal mushroom symptoms
- For women who do not want oral medication
Available Dosages
Canesten GYN 3-day therapy:
- 3 vaginal tablets of 200 mg
- Every evening a tablet
Canesten GYN 1-day therapy:
- 1 vaginal tablet of 500 mg
- Single application
Canesten GYN Kombi:
- 3 vaginal tablets + cream for the outside
- Recommended for external complaints
Canesten Extra (Bifonazole):
- cream 1x daily for 2-4 weeks
- Skin and foot fungus
Canesten cream:
- apply thin 2-3x daily
- For 2-4 weeks
How to Take
Vaginal tablets: 1. Evening before bedtime Two. Remove tablet from Blister 3. Insert deep into the vagina 4. With finger or accompanying applicator Five. Leave overnight in bed
Canesten GYN cream (vaginal):
- Use enclosed applicator
- Bringing in the evening
- In pregnancy: without an applicator!
Canesten cream (Haut):
- Clean and dry affected area
- Apply thin and rub
- repeat 2-3x daily
- 2-4 weeks or up to 2 weeks after symptom
Important notes:
- No tampons during vaginal treatment
- Latex contraceptives can be damaged
- Do not interrupt treatment in menstruation
Contraindications
**Canesten must not be used at:* *
- allergy to clotrimazole
- In the first pregnancies (vaginal)
Visit to:
- First infection (to confirm diagnosis)
- Frequent infections (more than 4x per year)
- Bloody or nasty smelling drain
- fever, abdominal pain
- No improvement after 3 days
pregnant:
- 1. Trimester: only after medical prescription
- From 2nd Trimester: can be used
- Don't use an applicator!
Style time: Application possible.
Possible Side Effects
Acid (1-10%):
- Local burning in application
- Itching
- Skin redness
Occasionally:
- Swelling
- Skin rash
- Increased outflow
Selten:
- Allergic reactions
- Bubble formation
Type reaction: A light burning or tingling in the first minutes after application is normal and no reason for concern.
Interactions
Important:
- damaged latex (condoms, diaphragms)
- During treatment and 5 days thereafter alternative prevention
No interactions with:
- Antibabypille
- Oral medicines
- Other creams
**For oral antimycotics therapy:* * Can be applied in addition.
