What is Ariline?
Arilin® vaginal cups contain the active ingredient Metronidazole and are used for the local (intravaginal) treatment of trichomoniasis and bacterial vagina. The vaginal tablets release the active substance directly at the infection site.
Trichomonad infections (Trichomoniasis) are caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis and are among the most common sexually transmitted infections worldwide. They express themselves through bad smelling, greenish-yellow outflow, itching and burning.
**In the case of trichomoniasis, the systemic (oral) metronidazole therapy is generally preferred, since the partner must also be treated. Arilin® vaginal cups can be used in addition or in light cases.
Active Ingredients & Mechanism of Action
Active ingredient: Metronidazol (500 mg Vaginalzäpfchen)
Active mechanism:
- Metronidazole is activated in the cell of the parasite/bacterium to toxic metabolites
- These metabolites damage the DNA of the microorganism
- Strange fractures in the DNA lead to cell death
- Works against protozoa (trichomonas) and anaerobic bacteria
Local application:
- High concentration of active substance directly in the vagina
- Lower systemic intake than oral administration
- Partial systemic absorption (approximately 20–25% of dose)
Activity spectrum:
- Trichomonas vaginalis
- Gardnerella vaginalis
- Anaerobe bacteria (Bacteroides, Fusobacterium, Clostridium)
